MOON 491 – network player and preamplifier with dual ESS DAC chips and a configurable phono input
The MOON 491 is a network player and preamplifier that combines streaming, D/A conversion, a phono preamp and a headphone amplifier in a single chassis. The network section is built around the MiND 2 streaming platform with UPnP support, Roon Ready certification and compatibility with Apple AirPlay, Bluetooth, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect and TIDAL Connect. Control is handled by the MOON MiND Controller app for iOS and Android, with access to Qobuz, TIDAL, Deezer and Spotify. Within the Compass collection, the 491 sits at the very top as the central source for both digital and analogue signals.
The digital section is based on two ESS 9039Q2M converters running in dual-mono configuration, complemented by a precision clock generator and a refined output stage. Power comes from MOON Hybrid Power (MHP) – a proprietary power supply architecture operating at switching frequencies above the audible band, delivering stable DC voltage with extremely low noise while protecting sensitive audio circuits. The design features a modular board ready for future upgrades, a dual Ethernet port with MOONLink and a service USB port for direct firmware updates.
The integrated phono preamplifier for both MM and MC cartridges allows impedance, capacitance, gain and EQ curves to be set directly in the menu, enabling a precise match to any given cartridge. The measured figures – THD+N and intermodulation distortion of 0.0004 %, a signal-to-noise ratio of 120 dB, crosstalk of –120 dB and frequency response of 10 Hz – 200 kHz (+0.5/–3.0 dB) – reflect a component designed to preserve signal integrity. The low noise floor and channel separation translate into clearly legible fine detail and rock-solid instrument placement within the stereo image.
Operation is made easy by a large colour display showing volume, album artwork and system information, together with front-panel controls and the aluminium CRM-4 remote; the BRM-1 Bluetooth remote is also supported. The chassis with bead-blasted aluminium side panels follows the brand's design language. Paired with the MOON 461 power amplifier, the 491 forms the most capable system in the Compass collection.
