The MOON 461 is an analogue power amplifier and the most powerful model in the Compass collection, designed for precise reproduction and control over demanding loudspeakers. At its heart lies the proprietary MDCA – MOON Distortion-Cancelling Amplifier architecture, originally developed for the flagship North collection, which reduces distortion and improves the linearity of the amplification stage. It is complemented by a design without global feedback and MOON transistors, creating a signal path geared towards fidelity to the source.
Power is supplied by two MOON Hybrid Power (MHP) modules, with each channel having its own supply. This dual-mono internal architecture increases channel separation, reduces crosstalk (-114 dB) and improves current delivery into lower load impedances. Output reaches 150 W per channel into 8 ohms, 300 W per channel into 4 ohms and 450 W in bridged mono mode into 8 ohms, with a damping factor of 425 and a signal-to-noise ratio of 114 dB.
A switch on the rear panel allows three configurations: Stereo, Bridged Mono and Bi-Amping Mono. Stereo mode serves for conventional two-channel reproduction, bridged mono delivers high single-channel output, and bi-amping mode separately powers the bass and treble sections of the loudspeaker. Connectivity is rounded out by MOONLink on a dual Ethernet port and a USB service port; the chassis with sandblasted aluminium side panels measures 42.9 × 8.7 × 36.8 cm.
Sonically, the combination of a low-noise signal path, dual-mono layout and high-current power supply contributes to stability across the varying impedance curves of loudspeakers. The result is transparent reproduction free of its own colouration, intelligibility of quiet passages with THD+N distortion of 0.005 % at 1 W, and dynamics preserved even at power peaks. Paired with the MOON 491 network player and preamplifier, it forms the most powerful system in the Compass collection.
