The MOON 390 is a line-level digital-to-analogue hub from the Canadian brand Simaudio, combining a preamplifier, streaming DAC, MM/MC phono stage and headphone amplifier in a single chassis. It follows on from the Neo 380D, but was developed from the ground up. This is a component without a power stage – the user chooses the power amplifier, which makes it possible to fine-tune the character of the final system.
Connectivity covers practically every common format: four HDMI inputs and one output (video passes through unprocessed, switching only), two Ethernet ports, three USB inputs, TOSLINK and AES/EBU, plus balanced and single-ended inputs and outputs. The HDMI board handles decoding of the native DSD bitstream from SACD, so connecting a universal player also opens up disc formats that are otherwise usually bypassed. Streaming is handled by the MiND 2.0 module, including TIDAL support and Roon endpoint functionality.
The preamplifier section is derived from the Neo 350P and shows itself in a low noise floor, controlled and precise bass and tonal neutrality. The MM/MC phono stage delivers a quiet, detailed presentation comparable to an external solution of the 110LP class and pairs well with mid-priced cartridges. With streamed material in 16/44 quality as well as with more demanding modern recordings, the 390 retains the legibility of layers, spatial separation of vocals and sufficient reach in the low frequencies.
Compared with the brand's reference series, the 390 has a simpler chassis – though still machined in-house – and a less extensive power supply, which shows up as slightly lower dynamic headroom and resolution in the quietest passages. Combined with mid- and upper-tier power amplifiers, however, it is an exceptionally comprehensive solution, backed by the manufacturer's 10-year warranty.
