MOON 310LP — phono preamplifier with balanced architecture and extensive loading options
The MOON 310LP is a mid-range phono preamplifier that builds on its predecessor and takes its performance further thanks to revisions to both the circuit design and the power supply. The construction is based on a balanced topology with precisely matched components and 4-layer printed circuit boards with pure copper traces, which shorten the signal path. The result is greater transfer accuracy and a significantly better signal-to-noise ratio. The unit is housed in a half-width chassis.
The power supply is implemented as a large isolated supply on a separate board with a toroidal transformer and two-stage voltage regulation. Part of the regulation is the i2DCf (Independent Inductive DC Filtering) technology, where every integrated circuit in the signal path of the audio section has its own choke — across two stages in total. The supply uses MOON's own electrolytic capacitors. Lowering the noise floor of the internal power supply reduces the need for an external supply, though connecting a compatible external power supply remains possible.
The user has at their disposal adjustment of resistive and capacitive loading as well as gain levels, allowing precise matching to both MM and MC cartridges. It is also possible to choose between the RIAA and IEC equalisation curves. The signal-to-noise ratio reaches 110 dBr at 40 dB gain and 88 dBr at 66 dB, THD is 0.001% and frequency response 20 Hz – 20 kHz ±0.5 dB. In practice this translates into a silent background, legible fine detail and stable localisation of instruments.
The output section offers single-ended RCA as well as balanced XLR connectors. Connecting to a balanced preamplifier or integrated amplifier brings a further reduction of the noise floor, better dynamics and a more transparent midrange. The sonic presentation matches the brand's typical character: clean and fast bass with good extension, open mids and airy, extended highs.
